Cromwell teen on assault charge after Facebook 'insult'

An 18-year-old youth who allegedly assaulted a 14-year-old boy because of a perceived insult on a social networking site will appear in the Alexandra District Court tomorrow.

Both teenagers are from Cromwell and the incident arose after a "perceived insult" was posted on Facebook, Sergeant Mike Williams, of Cromwell, said yesterday.

The 18-year-old allegedly punched the younger boy in the head after seeing him walking along the road, Sgt Williams said.

The 18-year-old would appear in court tomorrow on a charge of assault.

Sgt Williams said it was unusual for Cromwell police to receive a complaint about comments on social networking sites.

Complaints about text bullying were more common.
