A dedicated dog park could be on its way for Central Otago.

More than 900 dogs are registered in the area, according to Cromwell Dog Park committee figures.

Requirements would include a fenced-off area with double gates, allowing dogs to be let off the leash, Cromwell Dog Park committee chairman Chris Bardwell said.

Separate areas for small and large dogs could be created, and a designated park could also be used by the many travellers who took their dogs with them on their holidays.

The idea was put forward by committee secretary Raewyn Chatfield.

"Last weekend we met a group of fellow Airedale owners at the dog park at Rotary Park in Dunedin," she said.

"With social media it is easy for groups to organise this type of event."
