Warm weather drew a large crowd to the Roxburgh racecourse yesterday for the annual harness racing event.

From tiny tots in the fashion in the field to those in search of adult refreshments there was something for everyone.

Roxburgh Trotting Club president Neville Beckley said it was an outstanding day with an enormous crowd.

Campervans lined the carpark, people were sitting in deckchairs while catching up with friends — it was like the old days of picnic races, he said.

A sponsors’ shed, which had been rebuilt and improved, had drawn a lot of positive comments, Mr Beckley said.

The resurfaced track also garnered good feedback, which allowed Mr Beckley to finally relax.

"It was a bit of nightmare at the start. It didn’t get finalised until just before Christmas, but reports were that it was second to none. You had to hold your breath because you don’t know how it will go."

There was plenty to occupy all the family from a children’s entertainment area which had food and activities on offer.

Dressing up for the races is always part of the fun and Roxburgh offered fashion-forward men and children the chance to compete in fashion in the field alongside the traditional women’s section.
