The standard of driving through the Cromwell Gorge is raising the ire of residents.

A post on a community Facebook page said there had been "some pretty naff stuff going on" through that stretch of State Highway 8.

Other residents pointed the finger at tradesmen commuting through the gorge.

However, further comments alluded to a more general motorist issue on the highway.

Central Otago sub-area supervisor Senior Sergeant Clint Wright said police had noticed unsafe driving behaviours "from time to time" from a wide cross-section of motorists.

"Everyone deserves to get to where they are going safely, and enjoy their time on our roads.

"Police would urge road users to drive to the conditions, taking into account any posted speed limits."

Snr Sgt Wright issued a reminder to motorists to remove all distractions from the equation.

"Put down your cellphone before you head off, and ensure you drive distraction free.

"Make sure you have sufficient rest for your journey, buckle up your seatbelt."

Anyone with immediate concerns for the safety of road users should call 111.

Reports of unsafe driving can also be made by calling *555.
