Grocery store being extended

Building extensions to the Four Square store in Lawrence will turn it from a small grocery store into a mini supermarket, new owner Barry Adams says.

Mr Adams and his partner, Leonie Jenkins, owned Lumsden Four Square for about four and a-half years.

They bought the Lawrence Four Square about 14 weeks ago and had been trading from the building site.

Mr Adams said he saw an opportunity when the store came on to the market, buying both the shop and a house in Lawrence.

"We love the area - it's a great place. It's pretty unfortunate that we couldn't get to know people a bit better before we started pulling the place apart."

Like any building project, the expansion and renovation work was taking longer than expected, he said.

"We were given some timeframes for construction of the different stages. The shop front was supposed to be done by Christmas, but that's not going to be."

The building and renovations were taking place in five stages - shop front, car park, building extensions, renovations and internal fitting-out.

Foodstuffs owned the building, and it was taking care of the building extensions, which Mr Adams estimated would increase the size of the building by about a quarter.

Mr Adams was paying for the internal fitting-out, which he estimated would come to about $200,000.

The expansion would allow the store to offer an increased range of fresh, baked and delicatessen products, he said.
