The waters of Lake Roxburgh continue to flow below the Roxburgh Dam as the Clutha River, after generating electricity for 300,000 homes.

The water falls nearly 46m to the turbines of the  dam, with an average flow of 510cum every second.

The site, 9km north of Roxburgh, was chosen for a major hydro-electric project in 1947.

The first of the eight 40MW electricity turbines was commissioned in 1956, and the rest had been installed by 1962.

The  150m-long structure required 1.5million tonnes of concrete, much of which was poured by hand.
