Plans are well under way for the 16th annual Lawrence Summer Arts Festival in January.

Festival co-ordinator Maureen Cummings said the event's theme was hats, and those attending would be encouraged to wear one over the weekend of January 26-27.

The festival would be based along the main street in Lawrence and at "The Ark", which is festival patron Frieda Betman's garden in Lawrence, where there would also be a make-your-own-hat competition, Mrs Cummings said.

"Frieda has been our patron for the last few years. She's been such a stalwart for the festival from day one."

The art competition will be bigger than in previous years and include a special section for emerging artists, designed to appeal to non-professionals.

Prize money had increased to $1500 for first place, $500 for the emerging artist and $250 for people's choice.

Workshops, which were traditionally offered as part of the festival, would be held later in the year. There was also an opportunity to enter three-dimensional articles this year, she said.

Ben Ho, of Queenstown, and John Toomer, of Mosgiel, will be present as working and exhibiting artists, and will be supported by many others exhibiting.

Palmerston potter Peter Gregory will also be showcasing his talent.

Members of the Balclutha Floral Art Club will display their skills, the "Blokes Corner" will have Mike Weddell, of Dunedin, running a workshop on fly fishing and the Tuapeka Vintage Club is organising a car rally.

"This will be a weekend in the country not to be missed, with fine food, coffee and enjoyment for the young and more mature alike," Mrs Cummings said.

Festival ticket holders will be given a programme and a map listing all the artists and venues.

Entry will cost $10 per day 10am to 4pm, and $15 for two days with school children free.
