Historical material available online

Central Otago history can now be viewed in a modern format.

The Central Otago District Council has made material in its archives from as far back as 1866 available online to assist researchers.

An archive catalogue and samples of material online will complement a paper-based archive facility in Ranfurly, which holds over 5000 items.

Council records and archives officer Kas McEntyre said the initial focus of the new online archives repository was to make maps and plans accessible.

The site would continue to grow with more sample content and catalogue item descriptions added on a weekly basis.

Records from borough councils in the region, which were replaced by the district council in 1989, were avail-able through the archives.

Some records relating to the Waitaki, Tuapeka, Vincent and Southland County Councils were also held in the archives.

The council welcomed feedback on the new resource, including what those interested in the online archives would like made available.

The repository can be accessed at http://www.-codc.govt.nz/services/archives/archive-repository/Pages/defa....
