Because information centres are considered a district expense, decisions about them are made by the full council.
Cromwell Community Board members have several times raised their concerns about not being consulted on the Cromwell centre being relocated from the Cromwell Mall to a more visible site, near the giant fruit sculpture next to State Highway 8B, and the timing of such a move.
The project has been deferred several times because of its cost and because of the need to link it in with the planned redevelopment of the town centre.
The topic was on the board's agenda for yesterday's meeting, with a report tabled by the council's chief executive, Phil Melhopt.
"I'd like to thank you, Phil, for putting it before the community board. It's the first time we've been able to discuss it," said board member and district councillor Terry Emmitt.
The board was asked if it supported the relocation of the centre, and whether it would approve the board's land be used for the new facility.
Board member and district councillor Gordon Stewart said his only concern was the proposed location.
"Behind the big fruit [sculpture], it might be hard to see from the highway. Future discussions should give consideration to the actual location."
Mr Emmitt said, when the project went ahead, Murray Tce could be turned into a car park.
Board chairman, Neil Gillespie said "the journey" for the project was not finished - "the thing's not built yet ".
The board agreed to support the relocation of the information centre.
