Map call deferred

A decision on the design of a map of Lawrence and the wider Clutha district to be displayed in the main street of the town has been left on the table by the local community board, which is keen to avoid further ridicule on the matter.

On Wednesday, the Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board discussed the design and orientation of the map, which is to replace another map that was in Ross Pl.

The side of the street the original map was positioned on had made it hard to follow.

That was because it had originally been intended to position the map on the other side of the street, where its design would have aligned with the true direction.

However, the map had to be positioned on the southern side of Ross Pl because the owner of the wall where it was to go did not want a sign there.

The board was unsure whether to design the new map so that it was south oriented, which would mean the arrows on it would align with the true direction or orient it north and have the arrows pointing in the opposite direction.

Lawrence-Tuapeka ward councillor Geoff Blackmore said one way ``to get around it'' would be to separate the town map from the Clutha district map and orient them differently.

Board member Paul Tansley he did not think that separating the two maps would confuse people.

Board member Geoff Davidson suggested it might be easier to find a new place for the map on the northern side of Ross Pl rather than go through the process of redesigning it.

Board chairman Garry McCorkindale said it was an ``incredibly hard'' decision.

He was against making the district map south oriented as that would make it the only map of the Clutha district not oriented north.

The board decided to do further research before making a decision.
