A council spokesperson said the CODC had been monitoring the Omakau/Ophir water treatment closely after heavy rain yesterday.
"The dirty water coming through the river means that we can’t treat the water to an acceptable level."
Residents are asked to reduce water use as much as possible while works are completed to get the treatment plant producing again.
Should the water quality worsen, a boil water notice may be put in place.
Updates would be shared on the council's website and social media pages, the spokesperson said.
