Panel to consider winery, accommodation applications

Central Otago’s wine and accommodation sector is showing signs of further growth, with several projects due to come before the Central Otago District Council’s hearings panel.

The panel will next week consider various applications for winery developments and small-scale travellers’ accommodation.

Prophet’s Rock Wines Ltd has applied for consent to build a winery in Bendigo Loop Rd; Larksbay New Zealand Trustees Ltd has applied for consent to construct a building for wine tastings and sales, and to host functions, at 92 Felton Rd, Bannockburn; Naomi Dawn Johnston has applied for consent for travellers’ accommodation for six people, and other ancillary and residential buildings, on a site in Felton Rd,  Bannockburn; and R.J. and D.A. Henderson have applied to build travellers’ accommodation for up to five guests on a site in Bell Ave, Cromwell.

The split-level Prophet’s Rock winery would be 1547sq m and offer winery tastings and tours and host private functions.

At present, Prophet’s Rock Wines hosts up to 16 people at a time for wine tastings and tours, which are strictly by appointment.

The application says consent is being sought to allow up to 40 people at a time, allowing up to 260 individual tours throughout the year, but still only by appointment.

The applicant is also wanting to host up to 16 functions a year.

The Felton Rd building proposed by Larksbay New Zealand Trustees Ltd would be 123.8sq m and would be built at the northern end of a vineyard.

A kitchen would be included in the building, and the maximum patronage at any time would be 30 visitors and three staff.

Up to 15 functions a year at the site, with up to 100 people at each function, are also proposed.

The application from Ms Johnston is for consent to build a family home and ancillary buildings, and three travellers’ accommodation units and ancillary buildings, on a site which is accessed via a right-of-way off the western end of Felton Rd.

The building of the travellers’ cottages would be based on demand, and it was likely an average of two to four fee-paying guests would be present at any one time, the application says.

The Henderson application wants to establish travellers’ accommodation within a second residential unit in Bell Ave, Cromwell.

The 17.3m by 6.6m building, which has already been constructed, would only be leased to single groups, rather than by the room, and the applicant would continue to live on site and manage the behaviour of guests, the application says.

The applications will be considered by the Central Otago District Council’s hearings panel on Tuesday.
