Renovation needed for 4-day cricket

Alexandra could have a four-day first-class cricket match in November, provided the cogs of local government can work quickly enough.

The Vincent Community Board this week approved an overspend of $100,000 to renovate the changing rooms at Molyneux Stadium.

In June, the board put the spending into next year's budget, but since then, Otago Cricket promised a four-day match at the grounds this year, provided the upgrades were done in time.

The plan is for a four-day match between the Otago Volts and the Northern Knights, with training on November 22 and 23 and the game from November 24 to 27. Four-day cricket would then be a yearly event.

The need for the renovations stems from New Zealand Cricket's strict warrant of fitness requirements for grounds.

Central Otago District Council property and facilities officer Christina Martin said council contractors were working hard to ensure the improvements were done quickly.

''It's about saying 'let's go ahead and get this done and secure it for the community'.''

Board member Barrie Wills asked what the situation was concerning a new $56,000 sight screen, which Otago Country Cricket proposed to fund, and a new $100,000 scoreboard, which Otago Cricket and Otago Country cricket were investigating.

Ms Martin said there was no update on these projects, as they were not required this year.

A portable electronic scoreboard would be brought in from Dunedin in the interim.

Otago Country Cricket was securing a grounds keeper for the match and new covers, which were needed this year, she said.

Dr Wills hoped Otago Country Cricket did what was expected, but regarding the renovations, the board ''just had to get on with it''.

Work needed for the match included new glass wall frontings, painting and creating new power points. Other work the council would try to complete by match time, but was less urgent, included extending two changing rooms, new light fittings and new toilets and basins.
