Hearings on a proposed shake-up of the Central Otago district plan began in Alexandra yesterday.
Plan change 19 proposes a comprehensive suite of changes to the way the region’s residential areas are zoned and managed, and has been driven by the direction set out in the Vincent and Cromwell spatial plans.
The Central Otago District Council prepared the spatial plans in response to demand for residential land and housing affordability concerns in the district, and to plan for the anticipated growth over the next 30 years.
The change involves rezoning new land for residential use, identifying future growth areas, aligning existing residential zoning with the proposed new zones, and includes new provisions for managing land use and subdivisions within the zones.
Public submissions on the proposal closed in December and 171 were received.
The hearings continue this morning, then again for six days next month.
