An old fire engine took a former fire chief on his final journey yesterday as Alexandra stalwart John (Jock) Braidwood was farewelled with full fire service and RSA honours.

Mr Braidwood's casket was carried atop the 1970s fire engine after his funeral service in Alexandra.

The fire engine travelled past a guard of honour of firefighters and RSA members before being greeted with a two-gun salute at Pioneer Park, where Last Post was also played.

Mr Braidwood (85) received the Queen's Fire Service Medal in the 1993 New Year Honours and was also a life member and patron of the Alexandra-Clyde RSA.

He was a member of the Alexandra Volunteer Fire Brigade for 34 years and the chief fire officer for 16 of those years.

An obituary will follow.
