Three men were in hospital yesterday after a high-speed, head-on collision between a car and campervan on the Lindis Pass on Thursday night.

The accident happened 2km on the Omarama side of the Timburn Rd intersection, about 60km from Cromwell, and the road was closed until 9am yesterday when one lane was opened. The second lane was opened at 3pm.

Central Otago sub-area commander Senior Sergeant Jill Woods said the occupants of the car were North Islanders and a Spanish family was in the campervan.

The driver of the car was in a serious but stable condition in Christchurch Hospital, while a passenger in that vehicle was in Dunedin Hospital with spinal injuries.

The driver of the campervan, a Spanish tourist, was in Dunedin Hospital being treated for head injuries.

Snr Sgt Woods said the police investigation into the accident was continuing. Road conditions were fine at the time, she said.
