Wide load spills oil, closes road

A truck transporting a house started spilling oil in Burkes Pass early this morning, closing State Highway 8 for a time.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesman said the Fairlie Volunteer Fire Brigade was deployed about 4.30am to the Fairlie side of Burkes Pass, a mountain pass into the Mackenzie Country, after the truck started spilling oil.

"It appears to be some kind of mechanical failure and the truck was spilling a whole lot of oil.''

The incident blocked the road, the spokesman said.

"The fire brigade helped with tidying things up until NZ Transport Agency contractors got here, put some grit down, cleaned it up, and we headed home.''
