Fewer Christchurch pupils

The exodus of school pupils leaving Christchurch and enrolling in Otago schools in the wake of the February earthquake is beginning to recede.

Ministry of Education statistics show 757 Christchurch pupils remain in Otago this week, down from 1120 pupils at the peak.

There are still 316 pupils in Dunedin schools, 150 in Queenstown Lakes district, 148 in Waitaki district, 102 in Central Otago and 41 in Clutha district.

Most Christchurch schools were open, and it was expected the majority of pupils would return for the start of term two.

About 7600 pupils were sent to schools elsewhere after the quake, but nearly 3000 had returned.
