100 yachts expected

A record number of 100 yachts are expected to take part in this year's Aviemore Classic sailing event to mark the 25th anniversary of the largest trailer yacht freshwater event in New Zealand.

Held annually on Lake Aviemore since 1989, the two-day event had regularly attracted about 70 boats, but this year 100 were expected, Timaru Yacht and Power Boat Club trailer yacht section rear commodore Laurence Smith said.

That would beat the event's largest turnout of 97 boats in 1997, he said.

Rear commodore Smith said this year's event, which would take place on October 26 and 27, would involve a 22km course that circumnavigated the lake one and two-thirds times, and there would be an extra section to celebrate the 25 years of the event's history.

''This year there will also be the running of class championships and the Saturday fun race will also be held for the not-so-serious sailors.''

The Sunday prizegiving would also include the official launch of a book celebrating and recording past events, he said.

''There's been many a broken mast, ripped sails and some very exciting and enjoyable sailing for the serious competitor and the family cruiser alike,'' he said.
