Creating more residential land in Omarama to meet a demand for housing has been supported by the Ahuriri Community Board.
The board, at its meeting in Otematata on Tuesday night, supported a suggestion the Waitaki District Council should promote a variation to its district plan to rezone land in the southeast part of the town to residential.
The council's planning manager, Jack Chandra, said the extension to the southeast at the end of Ahuriri Dr was suggested at a community visioning workshop last year.
Those present at the workshop discussed how Omarama should plan its future development.
The meeting considered the status of rural-residential and rural-scenic land owned by Anne Schlosser, who last year applied to the council for a subdivision that did not comply with the requirements of the council's district plan.
A rezoning plan was prepared for the board to consider on Tuesday night, covering possible boundary amendments, further consultation with affected and adjoining landowners, reports on servicing the area with water and sewerage, a roading layout plan and the need for any reserves or other services
The proposal fits with other residential land being developed at Omarama at the eastern end of the Omarama Airport and north of the town along State Highway 8.
