Awakino opening day 'worth the wait'

The Waitaki Ski Club's Awakino Skifield has finally opened, and a club member says the skiing on opening weekend was "worth the wait".

Slopes at the volunteer-run skifield, near Kurow, had originally expected to see skiers in early June, but a lack of snow meant the skifield could not open until last weekend.

Waitaki Ski Club secretary David Campbell said now that skiing was finally under way, it would continue until mid-to-late September.

"There was a really good turn-out on Saturday, and great skiing. It's been worth the wait."

Mr Campbell said skiers had been waiting patiently for the snow to arrive, and the delayed opening had made the opening weekend "even more popular".

"There has been a few people come up during the week to take advantage of it all."
