Car crashes through fence, killing passenger

One person died and another was injured after being "severely trapped" in a crash in Oamaru late on Saturday night.

The single-vehicle crash occurred on Thames Highway, directly opposite Weaver St in Oamaru North, about 10.15pm.

The car left the road, smashing a fence and an electricity box. A reporter at the scene yesterday said it appeared, from tyre marks on the road, the car was travelling north on Thames Highway and went through a property’s wooden fence and smashed into a concrete wall between the neighbouring house.

Police said a passenger died at the scene, while the driver was injured.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) spokesman said the driver was "severely trapped" in the vehicle, and two crews from Oamaru worked to extricate the driver from the vehicle.

A St John spokeswoman said an ambulance attended the scene, assessing and treating one patient in a moderate condition, before they were taken to Oamaru Hospital.

A police spokeswoman said they were unable to confirm the gender or age of either person yesterday afternoon.

The road was closed, with detours in place, for more than four hours on Saturday night as the Serious Crash Unit attended.

Fenz crews were still at the scene until at least 2.30am and the road was reopened shortly after.
