Charged over rifle

A 51-year-old Oamaru man was arrested late on Friday night after Oamaru police and the Dunedin armed offenders squad were called out to a domestic dispute when he produced a firearm.

He has been charged with unlawfully possessing a cut-down .22 rifle and was released on police bail to appear in the Oamaru District Court on November 23.

Oamaru police were called about 9.45pm to a house on Thames Highway near the town boundary, responding with four patrol cars and about half a dozen armed officers.

After they arrived, they got the rest of the extended family out of the house, leaving the man the sole occupant, Sergeant Wayne Brew, of Oamaru, said.

The armed offenders squad was called as a precautionary measure, deploying to the house about 11.15pm.

About 15 minutes later they came out of the house and along Thames Highway with the man in handcuffs, taking him away in a patrol car.
