Forests owned by the Waitaki District Council have risen in value on the back of a stronger timber market.

The council has just had 138ha of forests revalued, the total worth rising from $710,000 last year to $859,261 this year.

Property manager Dougall McIntyre said the trees were mainly pinus radiata, with two small blocks of Douglas fir and shining gum, and the forests were spread throughout the district.

They were mostly planted from 2001 to 2006.

At present, the council is logging mature forests in the Glen Warren and Glen Eden reserves, in Oamaru, as part of ongoing reserve management.

The latest valuation values each hectare of the trees at an average of $6277, compared with $5144 last year.

"The increase is directly attributable to a 7.7% increase in overall log prices since the last valuation," he said.

It also reflected the general growth in the trees over time.
