Cyclists of all calibres will be able to compete in a new style of bike-racing being introduced in North Otago.
The Oamaru Multisport Club plans to hold weekly criterium-style racing every Monday night around a circuit at Weston from April 12, starting at 6pm at the Weston Sportsground.
Organiser Adair Craik said the aim was to introduce a competitive element for cyclist of all levels, ages and bikes, ranging from mountain bikes to high-tech racing bikes.
"A lot of people who have been cycling to keep fit have become very competitive and this will give them the chance to ride in races," she said.
"It will also show people how to train effectively in order to participate in events such as Motatapu or simply keep fit."
It would bring cyclists of all kinds together to swap ideas, learn what other people were doing, the equipment available and even to sell bikes.
It encompasses all age groups, from school age children to "old fellows", she said.
Handicapping would give people of all levels a chance to compete. Slowest bikes would start first and prices would be awarded for first across the line and fastest times.
Distances of races would range from 10km to 15km each night and Weston had been chosen because it was well lit, but with little traffic.
Participants, who could compete as teams or individually, would need front and rear lights and some form of fluorescent clothing or reflector bands.
