A new cafe opened in Oamaru on Saturday, but it is no ordinary cafe.

The Galley, a steam punk-themed cafe with a rusted-metal exterior, fires flames from the roof in 40sec bursts, while smoke blows from the handrails.

''It's even better than I could've imagined - I think it's cool and it just fits in with the whole area, really,'' owner Sally-Ann Donnelly said.

Mrs Donnelly had some design input, but it was Oamaru artist Don Paterson's brainchild.

''It's been his baby; he even made the tables inside,'' she said.

''The smoke and the flames were definitely Don.''

She thought the building's rusted metal-looking exterior fitted into the area, beside the Steampunk Playground just above Friendly Bay on the Esplanade, ''perfectly''.
