Hangi at Weston free to all

Louise Day's shopping list for the Waitangi Day celebration at Weston tomorrow reads something like this: 60kg of potatoes, 400 chicken pieces, more than 50 jumbo kumara and 10 monster pumpkins.

Anyone with a surplus of pumpkins was welcome to drop the vegetables in to Ms Day at the Waitaki District Council, while donations of fruit would also be gratefully accepted.

A free bus will transport people from Oamaru to the celebration, leaving from Northside New World at 9am, 10am and 11am, with a stop at the Waitaki District Council headquarters, and returning to town from 4pm.

The hangi will be laid at 10am, followed by multicultural performances from 11am, which will include bagpipe playing, an Indian cultural group, tribal dance, Filipino dancers and the sounds of an Irish tin whistle.

At 2pm, there will be a performance of Where Earth Meets Sky, by the Anne Harris School of Dance and Bronwyn Judge Dancers, followed by kite-flying at 3pm and the raising of the hangi at 4pm. People will have an opportunity to make kites and weave flax flowers during the day.

People were encouraged to bring a picnic, along with drinks. The hangi was free and the emphasis was on sharing and having a taste of the food
