Phil Jamieson has resigned as chief executive of Waitaki District Health Services.

After being on personal leave for several weeks, Mr Jamieson had decided to step down from the role, citing a need to focus on family life.

‘‘I am taking some time out for personal and family reasons before I look at [my] next steps,’’ he told the Otago Daily Times.

Mr Jamieson started in the role in August last year, replacing Ruth Kibble, who had been serving as acting chief executive since 2018.

He moved to Oamaru from Invercargill, where he had been working as the SBS Bank executive general manager of development since 2012.

On Mr Jamieson’s first day, he told the ODT moving the company into a financially sustainable position and overcoming Oamaru Hospital’s continued dependence on locum staff were two of his main priorities.

He achieved the latter by June this year, when Oamaru Hospital had filled 8.5 FTE permanent doctor positions and was no longer relying on locums.

While the hospital company recorded a net overall deficit of $1,071,209 for the 2020-21 financial year, more than the forecast deficit of $986,000, it was a $1.3 million improvement on the previous year’s $2.4 million deficit.

WDHS board chairman Mark Rogers thanked Mr Jamieson for his contribution to the company over the past 14 months.

‘‘During his tenure, Phil has contributed to the company’s performance and strategy and the board thanks him for this contribution,’’ Mr Rogers said.

Chief of finance Kelvin Kite has been appointed acting chief executive, while the board considers recruitment options.

‘‘The board has utmost confidence that Waitaki District Health Services Limited has the people, structures and systems in place to continue delivery of quality healthcare services while we work through this period of change,’’ Mr Rogers said.
