"I absolutely love it. It's just the best thing on a morning like this," Waitaki Community Gardens co-ordinator Annie Beattie said yesterday during an open day at the gardens.

The weather was sunny and the gardens, overlooking Chelmer St and the Waitaki Resource Recovery Park, were a hive of activity.

Swan plants were planted to attract butterflies, Oamaru stone blocks shifted, a composting demonstration was planned, the coppice block needed watering and Gloria Hurst brought daffodils from her Papakaio garden to sell, with the proceeds to go to the gardens.

Miss Beattie was delighted by the community support.
