Pipeline work to go ahead

The Waitaki District Council will go ahead with a ''private pipeline'' to ease regular flooding on a rural road south of Oamaru.

The decision to spend $15,000 on a pipeline and culvert at Springfield Rd, east of Fortification Rd, passed with no discussion yesterday.

Cr Guy Percival recorded the only vote against the pipeline. Last week he said the council should ''bite the bullet'' and spend the estimated $54,000 on a $120,000 NZ Transport Agency-subsidised project to raise the road to ensure it would not flood and therefore remain open year round.

Once the pipeline was installed floodwaters from the road would be diverted into local irrigation schemes.
