Playground strategy ' nonsense', says councillor

A draft playground strategy prepared for the Waitaki District Council was "nonsense in its present form" and paid no heed to affordability, Cr Jim Hopkins said yesterday.

A report to the corporate services committee said a capital works programme of between $120,000 and $150,000 a year over the next 10 years was needed to improve playgrounds.

In addition, three new developments were proposed at Moeraki, Oamaru Harbour and north Oamaru.

Cr Gary Kircher said it needed to be cut back to something that was reasonable.

The council had to be realistic about what was affordable and have a clear idea of what was really needed by the community, he said.

It was recommended the corporate services committee review the draft strategy within the next two months before undertaking further consultation with stakeholders and presenting a revised draft for recommendation.
