Police say they are now confident a burnt-out car found nearby is linked to the fatal crash in which a teenage motorcyclist died north of Oamaru on Thursday morning.
Police named the dead man yesterday. He was Thomas Alec Fry (18).
Police investigating his death are appealing for public help to identify a Nissan Skyline car, later found burnt out 15km from the crash scene.
The crash happened near Pukeuri on State Highway One about 4am. Pukeuri is 9km north of Oamaru.
"A young man is dead: we want to work out how this happened and we believe that the occupants of the Skyline can help us do so," Detective Sergeant Mike Ryder, of Oamaru, said today.
"We are now confident that the car found burnt out on Horse Gully Road on Thursday morning is linked to the crash scene on the State Highway and are keen to talk to those who were using it."
Police want to talk to anyone who may have seen the Skyline travelling on State Highway 1, north of Omaru.
"We believe the Skyline was coming from the north although we do not know where it was coming from," Mr Ryder said. "Equally we know that it has left the crash scene and travelled to Horse Gully Road."
The vehicle concerned is a light-coloured, grey two-door 1995 Nissan Skyline GTS.
Mr Ryder asked people who may have seen the car to contact Oamaru police, or the Crime Stoppers line.
