Remuneration issue resolved by council

Clutha councillors will receive a mixture of salary and meeting fees for their efforts after the issue of remuneration was resolved yesterday.

The council accepted the option of raising meeting fees from $180 to $230, which will take effect from the start of the 2008-09 financial year.

The changes mean very little difference in their pay - just a $20 increase - and is more a tinkering of the money they get from the Remuneration Authority.

Under the new arrangement, deputy mayor Hamish Anderson and the three committee chairmen, Jeff Seymour, Bruce Vollweiler and Peter McPherson, will receive a base salary of $14,500 plus an estimated $5060 based on attending 22 meetings during the year to make up a $19,560 package.

But they may earn more if they attend more council-sanctioned meetings.

This would benefit people like Cr McPherson, who represents the council at rural sector group and Local Government New Zealand zone meetings.

The last council meeting believed he should be rewarded for those meetings which added to his already significant workload.

All other councillors will receive a $7250 base salary plus the $5060 in meeting fees to make a $12,310 package which is also just $20 more than the past year.

Meanwhile, both community board chairpersons will be paid $7250 each, while other members receive $3625.
