Rubbish fire threatened pine trees

Crews from the Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade and Waitaki Volunteer Rural Fire Force extinguished a rubbish fire that had threatened a row of pine trees inland from Oamaru this morning.

Fire crews were called to the scene in McNally Rd at Corriedale about 8.15am.

Weston Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Bevan Koppert said it appeared the blaze re-ignited after it was initially thought to have been extinguished last night or early this morning.

The fire had started to spread to an approximately 50m-long row of trees, before fire crews bought it under control about 10.45am.

He said the fire "wasn't small" and could have spread quickly if not for the efforts of fire crews at the scene.

One appliance, two tankers and a "smoke chaser" utility vehicle helped fight the blaze.
