Palmerston skateboard enthusiasts put their case for a new $50,000 skateboard park for Palmerston to the Waihemo Community Board this week.

The skateboarders known as the East Otago Sk8 group, supported by the East Otago Lions Club, had prepared a Powerpoint presentation and a model of the new skateboard park.

The skateboarders have so far raised $2,000 towards the project.

Numerous fundraising events are being planned including sausage sizzles and discos.

The Palmerston business community were 100% in support of the new skateboard park, Josh Sprague told the community board.

Advertising spaces would be provided, he said.

The board decided to grant $1000 from its discretionary fund.

The Waitaki District Council last year voted to provide $10,000 in the long-term council community plan towards skateboard parks in Palmerston, Kurow and Hampden, Cr Kathy Dennison, of Palmerston, said.

She expected that about a third of that money would be available for the Palmerston skateboard park.

The East Otago Sk8 group have suggested it be built on the Runbrake St park in Palmerston opposite the Waihemo Lodge.

A skateboard ramp built in this area several years ago was recently demolished after it became unsafe.
