The annual Oamaru triathlon and duathlon is back this weekend.

It also incorporates the South Island Secondary Schools Triathlon & Duathlon Championships.

Oamaru Multisport Club committee member Adair Craik hopes to have 250 entries, including athletes from up to 38 schools.

It was always the biggest event on the multisport calendar, she said.

The club has been running its February Fun Run Series over the past month in the leadup.

Each of those races was well attended and Ms Craik hoped that trend would continue this weekend.

"We’re hoping that many of our locals will turn out and, even if it is in a team, just come out and do the event. We’ve had lots of support for our local events, so it would be lovely to see those people out again."

Alongside the competitive sections, there is a recreational section for those who just want a fun day out.

"The recreational grade is the one to go to if you’re not sure.

"It’s quite daunting for some people thinking there will be all these great people there, but in actual fact, no-one actually cares and everyone just wants everyone to have a great time."

Racing will begin about 10am tomorrow.
