Spate of rural burglaries reported; police advise security measures

Another two burglaries at rural North Otago properties have been reported to police, bringing the total number to six in the space of four days.

Between Saturday and Monday, properties in Homestead, Airedale, Seven Mile and Mt Misery Rd were targeted by burglars and various items stolen, including fuel and farming equipment.

A further two break-ins were reported to police yesterday, Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy, of Oamaru, said.

A farm shed in Ferry Rd was entered overnight on Monday and a red and white-coloured Honda CRF50 child's motorbike stolen.

The rugby clubrooms at Ngapara, inland from Oamaru, were also broken into.

It was not known if anything was taken.

A silver Mitsubishi Triton flat-bed ute reported stolen from a Kakanui Valley Rd address on Monday, and which police believe was used in the Airedale Rd burglary, was later found burned out in Old Mill Rd.

Snr Sgt McCoy said police had yet to establish a link between the burglaries, but that possibility had formed part of the investigation.

Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, earlier advised rural residents to ensure they had appropriate security measures in place and report any sightings of suspicious vehicles to police.

Police also wanted to speak to anyone who had been offered cheap fuel, he said.

Inquiries are continuing.
