Sport contract renewed for three years

Sport Otago will have its contract, worth $108,000 over its three-year term, renewed by the Waitaki District Council, which includes providing a regional sports co-ordinator for the district.

Sports Otago is contracted to provide a range of services for the district.

Its contract expired on June 30, but the council decided to renew it at $36,000 a year until June 30, 2016.

The council's community services group manager, Thunes Cloete, said renewing the contract would benefit communities within the district.

Having a co-ordinator based in Oamaru with access to a team of advisers and coaches for programmes and events far outweighed what the council was paying, he said.

Some of the services in the contract included:-
• Providing an office in Oamaru as the first point of contact for sport, outdoor recreation and physical activity information and inquiries;
• Educating the community to develop regular sports and exercise habits and to understand their benefits;
• Continuing to build on the success of current programmes for young people;
• Providing education opportunities and supporting organisations, clubs and other providers to run events and programmes;
• Providing facilitation, guidance and support to encourage sports partnerships, both between sports and with facilities.
