A chair inspired by the works of Janet Frame has been donated by Waitaki Girls’ High School to the house where the acclaimed author grew up in Oamaru.

Pupils painted the chair and presented it to the Janet Frame House, at 56 Eden St, this week.

Art and digital technologies teacher Erin Brown oversaw the project, which began in 2025.

She said the students had to do plenty of research before painting could start.

"Some of them have started learning about Janet Frame this year so that was quite an added bonus.

"At the beginning of the project, we were sitting around a table looking at the pictures [of the Janet Frame House], looking at quotes, discussing who she was, what her life was about, what it would’ve looked like during her time as an artist."

The chair was painted by year 10 students Presaya Kenneally, Roxanne Pelayo, Tamiya Wolstein, Evalette Welsh, Winter Dial.

"They showed up every week and really enjoyed it," Mrs Brown said.

"I think they did a really good job to represent her home and all those influences."
