A threatening phone call led to an Oamaru business being shut on Wednesday.

Rural insurer FMG’s Oamaru office was closed in response to a threat made by a customer.

FMG chief operations officer Conrad Wilkshire said the company was made aware of a threat one of its customers had made during a phone conversation that customer had with another insurance company "three weeks ago".

As soon as the company was made aware of the threat it was decided employees would work from home.

Normal day-to-day business resumed yesterday, Mr Wilkshire said.

Police told the company the person who made the threat was apologetic. Employees were never in any danger, he said.

• It was understood an alarm was activated at Oamaru’s AA building in Thames St on Wednesday. Further details were not available last night.
