Residents in Oamaru will not have to drive on the wrong side of the road if a movie production company is allowed to film a commercial for United States television in the town.

Beach House Films Ltd is seeking approval from the Waitaki District Council to film scenes that would require southbound lanes of Thames St between Coquet St and Steward St to be closed between 2pm and 6pm this Saturday.

Location manager Cameron Wood said the commercial, for a US-manufactured blood-thinning medication, would not be shown on New Zealand television, but said Milford Sound and the yellow-eyed penguin colony in Dunedin would feature as themselves on US television in the commercial's final edit.

He said Oamaru had been chosen by the US director of the commercial because it reminded her of Oregon.

"We looked at a number of suburbs in Auckland and just about every town in Otago.

"Looking from Coquet St, it is just absolutely lovely. We really like the look of the town."
