Dozens of people gathered on Oamaru’s Holmes Wharf yesterday to watch the Port FM Birdman competition.

It marked the end of what Mayor Gary Kircher called a great day of activities encompassed in the Friendly Bay Family Day  during which dozens of people took part in a range of activities such as beach digs and sandcastle competitions.

Oamaru’s Jazz Walmsley won the Lachie McLean Memorial Trophy Port FM Local Ultimate Birdman with her entry, a costume based on the house from the 2009 movie Up. She said she designed her cardboard and balloon heavy costume so that when she connected with the water she could just slide out of the outfit.

Miss Walmsley had always made costumes for her brother and friends for the event and this time she thought she would do it for herself.

"I wanted to win [the competition]. For my brothers and all the other guys, I  won it."

Mr Kircher said he was happy with the crowd numbers attending this year’s family day and  had not ruled out taking part in next year’s Birdman competition.

He encouraged his fellow councillors to also consider the opportunity.
