A 10-year-old Oamaru girl is on the international cartoon scene.

St Joseph’s School pupil Zara Davies has won a competition to have a cartoon printed in Beano, a  British children’s comic.

She had to replicate a Beano cartoon, but with her own take on its layout. Her efforts were printed in the March 18 edition, as part of a regular competition series.

She was more than pleased with how her first-ever published cartoon looked.

"I had happy tears. I wanted to run around the house screaming, but I didn’t."

She had been drawing cartoons for about a year.

"I’ve always liked drawing them. They’re fun to read."

Her favourite comics were Tintin and Peanuts.

"I liked the Tintin one because they’re more of a story."

When she grows up, Zara wants to be a cartoonist and a professional football player for Wales or New Zealand.

"My favourite player is Gareth Bale [who plays for Wales]."

Her mother, Rose, said while Beano did not say how many entries were received in the competition, it did say Zara’s was the only entry from New Zealand in a field dominated by the United Kingdom.

With her cartoon published she held out hopes for more to happen with her art.

She has gone on to create a cartoon about a meerkat that "menaces" its parents and she planned to  submit her idea to Beano in the hope it would pick it up as a regular feature.
