The Queenstown Rotary Club collected more than $10,000 during three days of fundraising for victims of the Haiti earthquake.
Club member Sheena Haywood said the money raised would be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Government.
The Rotarians were out in force at the Frankton New World supermarket last Friday, Saturday and Sunday, she said.
"Queenstown opened their hearts and wallets to the tune of over $10,000.
"It was incredible. People were really generous.
"Some even gave $100 notes and wrote out cheques."
The money will go to buy shelter boxes for Haitian families.
The tough, green plastic boxes contain a tent and other equipment designed for a family of up to 10 people, enabling survival for at least six months.
Also included are insulated groundsheets, thermal blankets, a multifuel stove, cooking equipment, tools, mosquito nets and water containers.
The organisation, ShelterBox, works directly with organisations in disaster-stricken countries through the international Rotary network.
The ShelterBox New Zealand project was founded by the Rotary Club of Mosgiel.
The cost of each shelter box is $1500.
• A free music festival at the Queenstown Village Green tomorrow will also raise money for people in need in Haiti.
Rock 4 Haiti will run from 12.30pm to 8.30pm and feature the Flaming Drivers, the Lynch Mob, Eddie Ledderhead, the Skitzofrantiks, the GCs, the Vigilantes and the Intergalactic Disco Movement.
