Axe-wielder claims self-defence in dispute

Armed Queenstown Police officers were called to a Marina Dr address in the resort on Saturday night responding to a report of a man wielding an axe.

Sergeant Tracy Haggart, of Queenstown, said officers were armed as a precautionary measure but ''that wasn't needed'', she said.

Sgt Haggart said police were still looking for a 48-year-old male allegedly involved in an incident at the property where he was a boarder.

The man arrived at the property about 10.30pm and had an argument with the tenants, a 42-year-old male and a 35-year-old female.

''He's thrown a few punches at the [42-year-old], his partner has stepped in and been struck by the male.

''He [the 42-year-old] has picked up an axe in self-defence.''

The 48-year-old had left the property by the time police arrived and still had not been located.

The woman was transported to Lakes District Hospital with minor injuries, while her partner was taken to the police station for questioning.

At this stage he was not facing any charge, Sgt Haggart said.

''There was talk of self-defence, but we need to get both sides of the story.''
