Yvonne Gray's culo divertimento was nearly named the country's best at the final of the Appleton Estate national cocktail competition in Wellington.
The drink, which contains one red chilli, Appletons rum, chocolate bitters and Campari, and is garnished with orange zest, was placed second Auckland bartender Barney Toy's creation named the winner at Matterhorn Bar, in Wellington.
Ms Gray, who works at Bar Up, beat six other South Island regional finalists on Monday and booked her place in the final against Wellington contender Jason Clarke and Mr Toy.
Appleton Estate brand manager Nigel Owen said Ms Gray made a real impression with her mix, and her cocktail was a highlight.
"Her recipe was a true reflection of her passion."
He was also impressed with Ms Gray's enthusiasm.
"Her personable and entertaining showmanship also helped her secure a place in the final."
