Shoppers at the Wanaka New World supermarket could soon find it easier to get a park, if a proposed extension of the car park is approved.
Foodstuffs South Island Properties Ltd has applied to the Queenstown Lakes District Council for resource consent to undertake earthworks at land it owns at 20 Dungarvon St to extend the existing car park, establish signs and create an accessway off Dungarvon St. The development would create 30 additional parks, including seven campervan spaces.
Foodstuffs' application said the car park no longer satisfied the needs and demands of its customers, "especially during the busy winter and summer months".
A report by Abley Transportation Consultants said while the proposed activity did not comply with two district plan rules, the non-compliance would have "no more than minor effects". It noted the aisle width did not meet size requirements and the queuing space at the proposed Dungarvon St entrance fell short of the required capacity, but these deficiencies could be overcome.
Abley identified several positive effects of the car park extension.
Wanaka New World was built in 1997 and extended in 2000 and 2004, including more warehouse storage, an extended supermarket floor area, offices and extra car parking.
