Australian chef Iain "Huey" Hewitson may reel in more than a million viewers for his top-rating cooking show, but his talent for catching the attention of television watchers did not extend to the fish in Lake Wanaka yesterday.

The self-confessed "fishing jinx" took a trip on the lake yesterday, filming for Huey's Kitchen.

The Channel 10 programme is is the highest-rating Australian daytime TV show, attracting about 1.2 million viewers a week.

Even before he stepped on to the boat of his Eco Wanaka host Chris Riley, Hewitson was decrying his fishing abilities.

"I'm the world's worst fisherman and will probably jinx this whole trip. I'm just too restless to be any good at it," he said.

"All my audience knows I can't fish, but I can certainly cook them."

Hewitson and his production crew have been in Wanaka this week filming some of the resort's tourism and culinary attractions.

His show will also feature Edgewater chef Damon McGuiness, Cardrona Merino lamb supplier Ben Gordon, McGregors piemaker Bernie Sugrue, and Mt Difficulty winemaker Matt Dicey.

Hewitson has been involved in the television cooking industry in Australia for about 20 years.

Born and raised in the Kapiti Coast town of Otaki, north of Wellington, he was a chef and owned restaurants in Christchurch before moving to Melbourne in 1991.

His predictions about his woeful fishing record proved correct on Lake Wanaka yesterday morning.

He failed even to get a nibble for the cameras.

"It's only the second time I've ever taken someone on a trip and we haven't caught a fish," his guide, Mr Riley said.
