Car parking changes approved by board

Public car park limits are about to change in an attempt to encourage turnover of lakeside car parks and push all-day parks further out from the centre of Wanaka township.

Following a recent review of parking controls and a public hearing, the Wanaka Community Board yesterday approved many parking changes and made minor amendments to the overall document.

A schedule of the controls and maps showing the changes will be considered by the utilities committee at its meeting next month before it is finally adopted by the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

The changes include. -

• Introduction of 120-minute parking on Dungarvon St between Ardmore and Brownston Sts.

• 120-minute parking generally retained in Brownston St, except for a section between the entrance to the New World supermarket and Helwick St.

• 30-minute parking to replace some 60-minute parks in Ardmore St.

• Moving a disabled car park from the Dungarvon St car park to outside the Aspiring Medical Centre.

• Reducing 180-minute parking to 120 minutes in the first lakefront car park (giving access to the dinosaur playground).

• Reducing the unrestricted parking to 120 minutes in the second lakefront car park (entrance opposite Dungarvon St).

Skifield staff have been asked not to park all day in the Brownston St car park behind the BP service station, in order to free up the parks. They are now parking at the showgrounds, where they are picked up by skifield vehicles.

Wanaka service centre manager Barbara East said the skifield workers' compliance had reduced the "parking crisis" in the central business area.

Steps are under way to build a shelter at the showgrounds for skifield workers to use while they wait to be picked up.
