Cardrona skifield to reopen today

Skiers and snowboarders can return to Cardrona Alpine Resort today, after a four-day closure of the skifield's facilities.

Cardrona was forced to close on Tuesday to drain wastewater from its oxidation pond which posed an environmental risk because of near-overflow levels.

Cardrona media spokeswoman Nadia Ellis said the skifield was now ready for visitors.

"Our snow conditions are good and with people not being able to visit us for most of the week, we're expecting a strong turnout," she said.

The level of the skifield's oxidation pond had been lowered during a four-day operation which involved massive storage tanks and a six-truck tanker convoy, operating in relays, transporting wastewater to a disposal facility in Queenstown.

Cardrona was "absolutely confident" levels at the wastewater pond would not pose any overflow risk again this season, Ms Ellis said.
